About Service Nest
A home-services decision platform
Service Nest is a free U.S. home-services directory and research library covering 16 home-service categories across 48 states. It is operated by Service Nest Directory LLC. Searching the directory, reading the guides, and requesting quotes are free for homeowners — we never charge for access and we do not sell homeowner details.
How the site is organized
Most directories mix “hire someone” pages with “understand the problem” pages until neither works. We keep them on separate paths so you always know which one you are reading:
- Services — commercial category pages. Who does this work, what a job covers, and which providers serve your area.
- Knowledge — diagnosis, maintenance and hiring guides. What is going wrong, what fixing it involves, and where the DIY boundary sits.
- Research — cost benchmarks and side-by-side comparisons for the decisions that are genuinely close calls.
- Locations — state-level coverage: providers serving the state, licensing requirements, and regional cost context.
- Tools — free calculators for normalizing three contractor bids onto the same scope before you compare prices.
Where our data comes from
Cost and market figures are not invented, and they are not scraped from other directories. Each number on a state page is attributed inline to its source:
- Wages and labor costs — the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) program, at state and metropolitan level, cited with its survey year.
- Cities, population and ZIP data — the U.S. Census Bureau. We use real places and real ZIP codes; we do not generate location names.
- Licensing— each state’s own licensing authority, named on the page (for example, the Contractors State License Board in California), so you can verify a credential at the source rather than taking our word for it.
Where we do not have data for a state or a trade, the page says so rather than filling the gap with a national average presented as a local one.
How listings and placements work
Provider listings come from two places: businesses that register and claim their own profile, and directory entries we maintain. Anything that is a paid or promoted position carries a Featured badge in the listing table and is sorted to the top — it is a placement, not an editorial ranking, and we label it that way everywhere it appears.
A Verifiedbadge means we have checked the business’s contact details and claimed status. It is not a warranty of workmanship, an endorsement, or a substitute for confirming a licence and insurance yourself.
Run a home-service business? You can claim and manage your listing directly.
Editorial standards
Guides in the Knowledge and Research centers are produced and reviewed by the Service Nest editorial team. A guide is not published until it has passed an internal audit covering factual accuracy, source attribution, and whether it actually answers the question it targets. Pieces are re-reviewed on a schedule, and every guide carries its publication date and, where it has been revised, its last-updated date.
Commercial listing pages and editorial guides live on separate URL paths and are written to different standards. A featured placement buys position in a listing table; it does not buy coverage, a recommendation, or a change to a guide.
We deliberately do not publish aggregate star ratings as search-result rich snippets. Doing so requires ratings drawn from verifiable, individually attributable customer reviews, and until our review data meets that bar, marking it up would overstate what we actually know.
Found something wrong? Tell us — corrections are made on the page, and substantive ones update the review date.
What we are not
We are not a licensing authority, a contractor, or a party to any work you arrange. We do not inspect job sites and we do not guarantee outcomes. Before you hire anyone — found here or anywhere else — confirm their licence with your state board, ask for current liability and workers’ compensation certificates, and get the scope in writing.
